Loon Mountain, Waterville Valley – Great New Hampshire Skiing

February 9th, 2013 by billwebb

Our best snow of the season has arrived in central New Hampshire! A foot of light powder is just what the skiers ordered and it comes at a great time as we head into President’s Day week and school vacations.

This weekend we have guests at our New Hampshire bed and breakfast who are tubing at Loon Mountain, skiing at Waterville Valley and dog sled riding with Barking Brook Kennels. And one of our guests is participating in the Fishing Derby sponsored by the Meredith Rotary Club. Quite a mix of activities.

While we have guests with a variety of interests they all agree that starting their day with one of our country breakfasts and landing back in one of our cozy rooms is the best way to start and end a day.

It goes to show that Holderness and the Squam Lake area are not just summer destinations. The Inn On Golden Pond is open year round and we can help you plan a day full of fun anytime of the year. Whether you’re planning activities in Lincoln, NH or Meredith NH, on Lake Winnipesaukee or Squam Lake, on Loon Mountain or Mount Tecumsah, if you’re looking for quality accommodations we’ve got you covered.

NH Dog Sled Adventures Near Our Bed and Breakfast/Inn

January 26th, 2012 by billwebb

Snow! Snow! Snow! That’s what we wish for every winter here in New Hampshire. A snowy winter is important for skiers and snowmobilers, but it’s especially critical for dog sled enthusiasts.  Dog sled rides are a great, different adventure and we have a couple of kennels close to our Holderness B&B that offer rides to the public. This is a great way to explore the countryside of the New Hampshire’s lakes region and the White Mountains. Imagine winding your way through the back woods, no one else around – a wonderful way to see Mother Nature’s winter grandeur.  You can share the driving experience with a professional or you can sit back and leave the driving to them.

Check out these two sites for more information about dog sledding opportunities.    Barking Brook Sled Dog Adventures    and    Muddy Paw Sled Dog

Of course, at the end of the day what could be better than returning to our cozy bed and breakfast/inn?  Sit by the fire, a glass of wine in hand and enjoy a quiet evening. Or dine at one of  the many excellent restaurants we have in the Squam area.  You’ll get a great night’s rest in one of our spacious, comfortable guestrooms and when you rise the next morning you’ll smell fresh coffee and the aroma of a home cooked breakfast as we get you ready for another day of winter activity.

The Inn On Golden Pond is an excellent lodging choice in the Holderness, Plymouth and Meredith NH area.  So come enjoy the wonders of winter, perhaps a little differently than ever before – on a sled pulled by a team of pure bred Siberian Huskies!

Holderness, NH celebrates its 250th birthday

June 22nd, 2011 by billwebb

August 5 – 8 will be a special weekend in the town of Holderness as it celebrates its 250th birthday. There are lots of activities planned ranging from a grand parade to a pancake breakfast hosted by our local fire department.

A group of wonderful volunteers has been planning the event for months and they’ve thought of everything. At various times throughout the weekend there will be a folk concert, a street dance and a square/contra dance. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will be offering free admission and the Historical Society will be the scene of many activities. There will be an appearance by the nationally famous Mattatuck Fife and Drum Band and lots of historic re-enactments and self guided tours of historic sites. You can get more details and updates at the Holderness 250th website.

If you’re planning to be in the Plymouth, NH or Meredith, NH area that weekend you should definitely make a point of visiting Holderness at some point. A celebration like this really represents small town New Hampshire at its best.

Of course, beautiful Squam Lake is a great place to visit anytime. Check out the quality lodging we offer at our lakes region bed and breakfast/country inn. We’ll help make your visit to Squam a memorable one.

We're not 250 years old, but here's a picture from the early days of the building we now call The Inn On Golden Pond. Time and lots of tender loving care sure makes a difference!

Join us at our Squam Lake bed and breakfast inn for an extraordinary New Hampshire getaway.

May 23rd, 2011 by billwebb

This is going to be an exciting summer around Squam Lake. It’s the 30th anniversary of the filming of the classic movie “On Golden Pond” which was filmed here in Holderness. Our traditional New Hampshire  bed and breakfast took its name from the movie not because we are on the lake (which we’re not), but because we felt the movie reflected the sense of place and family which so typifies the rural part of our beautiful state.

We’ve been here as innkeepers for 27 years and one of the great things about the area is how little it has changed. The fresh, clean waters of Squam are still the same high quality they were years ago. And the development in town and around the lake has been minimal, not changing the basic feel of the community.

In an extraordinary celebration of the 30th anniversary there will be 30 performances of  the play “On Golden Pond” throughout the summer and into September at Little Church Theater in Holderness. These shows will be directed by the author of  ”On Golden Pond”, Ernest Thompson, who now resides locally. There will be many opportunities to meet Thompson and participate in conversations about the movie and the story. Follow this link to Little Church Theater’s website for a detailed schedule.

Seeing one of these performances would be a great reason to visit our Squam Lake (Golden Pond) Inn and spend a night or two. Choose one of our spacious guestrooms and treat yourself to a great New Hampshire getaway. Spend the day boating on Squam or Lake Winnipesaukee; hiking the Squam Range or the White Mountains; shopping in Meredith or Plymouth or driving some of our scenic back roads. Then spend an unforgettable evening enjoying theater history in the making. This On Golden Pond experience will be as authentic as it gets!

It truly is Golden Pond

A great New Hampshire getaway weekend

January 23rd, 2011 by billwebb

Each year we hold two candlelight dinner weekends in the spring at our Squam Lake bed and breakfast. This year’s dinners will be held on the weekends of March 18 & 19 and April 1 & 2. Our normal hospitality is supplemented with a special 5 course candlelight dinner on Saturday night. Bonnie is the chef and Bill is the waiter. These weekends have become a favorite with our repeat guests some of whom have been coming almost every spring since we started this tradition 17 years ago. Since we do not normally serve a dinner here at the Inn this is a very special event. Bonnie really out does herself with delicious home made soups, creative salads, mouth watering entrees and sinful desserts.

This is an excellent way to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, but most of our dinner guests just enjoy the great food and good company of others here for the weekend. Of course, this is maple syrup season so during the day a stop at a local sugar shack can be great entertainment. The summer is still months away so New Hampshire towns like Meredith, Sandwich and our own Holderness which revolve around Squam Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee are pretty quiet. Plymouth on the other hand is active as Plymouth State University is in session. There’s always something to do.

So come up for a great New Hampshire weekend getaway and celebrate the end of winter with us. The weekend is priced at $375 per couple which includes 2 night’s lodging in one of comfortable rooms, two country breakfasts and our gourmet dinner on Saturday. Once you come you’ll be hooked!

Great summer entertainment and lodging near Plymouth and Meredith, NH

August 12th, 2010 by billwebb

The weekend of August 20 – 22 will feature  the White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival which takes place just to the north of us in Thornton in the Pemigewasset River Valley. The three day event is the largest outdoors Blues festival in New Hampshire and is now celebrating its 14th year. If you’re a Blues fan this is the place to be. The lineup of performers includes 4 of this year’s Blues Music Award winners.

This festival is just one example of the wonderful entertainment opportunities near our Squam Lake bed and breakfast. We offer quality lodging near Plymouth, NH which is where the New Hampshire Music Festival performs throughout the summer months. During the school year the Silver Center for the Arts at Plymouth State University has a full schedule of music and theater and that venue is only 10 minutes from our Holderness inn.

We have some great summer theater in Meredith which is just to our south at the tip of Lake Winnipesaukee. So if you need accommodations and are looking for a Meredith, NH inn or bed and breakfast you should give us a call.

No matter what your taste in music you’ll find something to your liking here in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region.  But hurry – summer’s almost over!

A great day at the White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival

Authors visit our Squam Lake NH Inn/Bed and Breakfast

August 3rd, 2010 by billwebb

One of the most rewarding parts of being an Innkeeper is having a chance to talk with so many people who come from all over the world and have or have had very interesting careers. I once thought it would be fascinating to make a list of the various professions we’ve had represented in the breakfast room at our New Hampshire inn and post it on the wall. What a source for conversation that would be!

Recently we had two guests who I discovered had written books. The first was Huck Fairman who authored “Noah’s Children” a story of an individual who awakens to the many environmental crises threatening our ways of life. Huck and his wife Pam were visiting friends on Squam lake, but spent a leisurely breakfast with us comparing the challenges of parenting teenage girls.

The second author/guest was Bob Isett who wrote “Think Right, Feel Right”  a building block guide for happiness and emotional well being. Bob and his wife Karen were visiting the New Hampshire lakes region for a wedding. While relaxing on our front porch they shared some of their spare time with me to engage in some conversation which is when I discovered that Bob was an author.

Both books are available at Amazon.com. I’m hoping to find time to read both once our season winds down.

Breakfast time is a chance for us to get to know our guests and to offer suggestions for things they might enjoy doing that day. We have many ideas on our website for things to do in Holderness, Plymouth, Meredith and other towns in central New Hampshire around Squam Lake as well as several suggested day trips through the lakes region of New Hampshire and the White Mountains.

We hope you’ll choose the Inn On Golden Pond for your lodging when visiting the area. We offer quality accommodations, friendly conversation and as you can see we host fascinating people.
