Play at Funspot, Stay On Golden Pond

August 11th, 2012 by billwebb

Whenever we travel south on Route 3 through Weirs Beach we always pass Funspot. It’s sometimes hard to remember exactly when certain businesses appear, but Funspot seems to have always been there. Turns out there’s a good reason for that. They are now celebrating their 60th anniversary!

Funspot is the world’s largest arcade. They’ve got video games, pinball games, kiddie rides and more. Over 500 games in all.  There are bowling lanes – both Ten Pin and Candlepin – all of which feature automatic scoring systems.  They also have indoor and outdoor mini golf. And for the older crowd they offer bingo games nightly. But one of our favorite things at Funspot is their bumper cars. Takes us back to our childhood!

The Inn On Golden Pond is a short 15 minute drive from this remarkable facility.  Funspot is a must stop when you’re visiting New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. You can spend the day enjoying the cool waters of Squam Lake or Lake Winnipesaukee and then have a hot time bowling, mini-golfing or playing video games at night.   Why not plan your NH escape today? Combine a relaxing stay in one of the comfortable guestrooms at our bed and breakfast with a great choice  of fun activities you’ll find nearby.

Center Harbor Fireworks Near Our Squam Lake Inn

June 21st, 2012 by billwebb

Many towns in the New Hampshire Lakes Region have 4th of July celebrations capped off with fireworks.  One of the most picturesque settings is in Center Harbor.

Center Harbor is one of the 5 communities that border Squam Lake and is located about ten minutes from our Holderness bed and breakfast. The fireworks are set off over Lake Winnipesaukee. We watch from the hillside where the town library and the fire station are located. This vantage point offers a great view.  Earlier in the evening starting at 7:00 there will be a concert featuring the group “Monadnock.” The boy scouts sell refreshments and generally everyone has a great time. It’s a real old fashioned 4th of July celebration.

One thing about watching from the hillside is that we often get glimpses of other towns’ fireworks. Sometimes we see part of the Meredith show and as we look down the length of Winnipesaukee we see others including Wolfeboro, a town which claims to be America’s Oldest Summer Resort.

Now would be a good time to make your 4th of July plans. Spend a few days enjoying one of the spacious guestrooms at our Squam Lake Inn, enjoy the fireworks, take in some summer theater, hike the Squam range and get out on the lake.

New Hampshire Weekend Getaway at our Squam Lake Bed & Breakfast/Inn

March 25th, 2012 by billwebb

If you’re looking for a special weekend getaway consider joining us for one of 18th Annual Candlelight Dinners. We offer a 5 course dinner by candlelight as part of a weekend package. This only happens twice a year either in March or April. Our first dinner weekend which is coming up is sold out, but our second weekend – April 13 & 14 still has room.

This is a great way to explore the Squam Lakes area when things are quiet. With such an early Spring the snow is gone and the ice has melted off the lake. You should be able to hike one of the area trails without any bugs! Central New Hampshire has lots to offer regardless of the time of the year. Plymouth, home of Plymouth State University, is bustling and Meredith, just 15 minutes away on Lake Winnipesaukee, is filled with charming shopping opportunities.

Our weekend package offers you one of our bed and breakfast’s spacious guestrooms for two nights, a full country breakfast for 2 each morning, and dinner for 2 on Saturday night – all for only $395. Come on up!

New Hampshire Fall Foliage on Squam Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee

August 30th, 2011 by billwebb

As we get to the end of August the days are cooling down slightly and the evenings are definitely cooling down. It’s a great time of the summer, but as the days get shorter we realize fall is just around the corner.

Fall is our favorite time On Golden Pond. Now is the time to be thinking about booking an October visit to our Holderness B&B. The area surrounding Squam Lake and throughout the White Mountains will be ablaze with color. Reds, yellows, oranges… Mother Nature’s true art work is on display with the beautiful trees everywhere in the northeast.

Of course, what better way to enjoy the fall beauty than by spending a few days at a country inn/bed and breakfast. Experience our exceptional New Hampshire lodging where you’ll be pampered in our comfortable, spacious guest rooms and in the morning with our full country breakfast. Spend the days driving through the mountains or hiking the numerous trails in the Squam Range or the White Mountains.

And fall is also a great time to be on Squam Lake or Lake Winnipesaukee. Plan to include a boat tour on either lake during your visit.

If you’re looking for some musical entertainment in a fun and unique venue you should check out the Meadowbrook  U.S. Cellular Pavilion in Gilford, NH near the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. This a wonderful outdoor facility which features big name artists. It’s conveniently located a half hour from our Squam Lake bed and breakfast. Seats are available under a covered Pavilion or out in the open, including an open lawn area. There is also a restaurant on site if you’d like to include dinner in your plans, although seating is limited and you need to reserve ahead of time.

This summer you can see great shows by performers as varied as Toby Keith and Bob Dylan. Or perhaps you’d like to spend an evening with Chicago or Lady Antebellum. You can catch them all right here in the lakes region.

Join us at our Squam Lake bed and breakfast inn for an extraordinary New Hampshire getaway.

May 23rd, 2011 by billwebb

This is going to be an exciting summer around Squam Lake. It’s the 30th anniversary of the filming of the classic movie “On Golden Pond” which was filmed here in Holderness. Our traditional New Hampshire  bed and breakfast took its name from the movie not because we are on the lake (which we’re not), but because we felt the movie reflected the sense of place and family which so typifies the rural part of our beautiful state.

We’ve been here as innkeepers for 27 years and one of the great things about the area is how little it has changed. The fresh, clean waters of Squam are still the same high quality they were years ago. And the development in town and around the lake has been minimal, not changing the basic feel of the community.

In an extraordinary celebration of the 30th anniversary there will be 30 performances of  the play “On Golden Pond” throughout the summer and into September at Little Church Theater in Holderness. These shows will be directed by the author of  ”On Golden Pond”, Ernest Thompson, who now resides locally. There will be many opportunities to meet Thompson and participate in conversations about the movie and the story. Follow this link to Little Church Theater’s website for a detailed schedule.

Seeing one of these performances would be a great reason to visit our Squam Lake (Golden Pond) Inn and spend a night or two. Choose one of our spacious guestrooms and treat yourself to a great New Hampshire getaway. Spend the day boating on Squam or Lake Winnipesaukee; hiking the Squam Range or the White Mountains; shopping in Meredith or Plymouth or driving some of our scenic back roads. Then spend an unforgettable evening enjoying theater history in the making. This On Golden Pond experience will be as authentic as it gets!

It truly is Golden Pond

Mooseman and Timberman Triathlons near our bed and breakfast lodging

April 1st, 2011 by billwebb

New Hampshire’s lakes region is home to two triathlons during the summer months. Both are part of the Ironman 70.3 series.

The first, the Mooseman Triathlon, occurs on June 5 and is held at Newfound Lake which is about 30 minutes from our Squam Lake bed and breakfast. There are two parts of this triathlon. The first is the long distance race which consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. There is also an International level triathlon which is a shorter version with a 1.5 mile swim, a 27.25 mile bike ride, and a 6.2 mile run.  Either one seems like a challenge to us!

Over the years we have had many participants of these races stay with us. Getting a good night’s rest prior to and after a race like this is an important part of a top notch performance. Our quality lodging is just the answer and since our inn is near the Mooseman Triathlon site on Newfound Lake we’re a natural choice.

The second race, the Timberman Triathlon, is held on August 21 and is located on Lake Winnipesaukee. The starting point is by Ellacoya State Park which is also about 30 minutes from the Inn On Golden Pond.  This event features two races. The first, a long distance race the same as the Mooseman race. The second is a Sprint which has a .3 mile swim, a 15 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run. We’re getting closer to our level.

We always enjoy sharing the weekend with these wonderful athletes who train so hard and push themselves to conquer challenges most of us wouldn’t consider. So if you’re looking for comfortable, quality lodging near the Mooseman or Timberman Triathlons we have just the accommodations for you. Check out our spacious guest rooms and plan to make your participation in either of these New Hampshire triathlons a reason for a great getaway weekend as well.

Here’s a link to a clip from YouTube which shows that the Timberman Triathlon is much more than just a race!

Enjoy great theater in Meredith, NH and great lodging at our Holderness Inn

July 22nd, 2010 by billwebb

Last night we enjoyed an evening out taking in a wonderful performance of “Chicago” at the Summer Theater in Meredith Village. What a great job these young performers do! We are very fortunate to have such professional theater here in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. This particular troupe performs throughout the summer at the Interlakes High School in Meredith. “Chicago” will run for two weeks followed by two weeks of long time favorite “Camelot” and then the season ends with a two week stretch of the Broadway hit “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” Performers are primarily college students and recent graduates who come for the summer from all over the country. We envy their energy and are in awe of their acting, singing and dancing talents.

The theater is an easy 15 minute drive from our Squam Lake B&B. With performances beginning at 8:00 pm it’s convenient to have a leisurely dinner beforehand at one of the area’s many excellent restaurants. And after an evening of great entertainment you get to retreat to your comfortable room here at the Inn On Golden Pond for a great night’s sleep. How can you resist?

Close by entertainment like this is just one more reason to choose our Holderness Inn when you’re looking for Lake Winnipesaukee or Squam Lake area lodging.

Need a Meredith New Hampshire Bed and Breakfast? Try us.

June 3rd, 2010 by billwebb

The New Hampshire Lakes region is pretty compact which makes it easy for visitors to see a variety of sites without having to move from lodging place to lodging place. Meredith, NH is just 15 minutes south of us so if you’re looking for a Meredith bed and breakfast the Inn On Golden Pond should be high on your list.

Meredith is a charming town located at the northern end of Lake Winnipesaukee. It’s the home to several very good restaurants and some great shopping. The town has developed an inviting park along the shoreline of Lake Winnipesaukee and there is a wonderful walkway/boardwalk which follows  the edge of the water. It’s a great place to take an evening stroll, perhaps with an ice cream cone in hand.

There is also top notch summer theater in Meredith. Summer Theater in Meredith Village offers musicals throughout the summer season. Performances are held at the Interlakes High School just a short distance from the downtown.

Of course, there’s quite a difference between the activity level on Lake Winnipesaukee and that which you’ll find here on Squam Lake. Squam is more low key offering an excellent place for canoeing, kayaking and smaller motor boats. And while Squam Lake is the state’s second largest it is considerably less developed than its larger counterpart Lake Winnipesaukee. It’s nice to be able to stay in Holderness where things are quieter, but have access to the hustle and bustle of Meredith and similar towns in the lakes region.

So if you’re looking for a B&B in Meredith you might want to think about traveling up the road a few miles to Holderness and to our quality bed and breakfast – the Inn On Golden Pond.

Meredith NH theater and our Squam Lake Bed and Breakfast, a great combination

May 22nd, 2010 by billwebb

Head to New Hampshire’s lakes region this summer and enjoy great theater. One of our favorites is Summer Theatre in Meredith Village. They do great musicals throughout the season changing the selection every two weeks. Among the shows they will perform this summer are Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago and Camelot. These are professional actors and singers who spend their summer in the lakes region. The quality of their work is outstanding.

Our Squam Lake bed and breakfast is very close to Meredith NH which is at the northern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee. Performances are held at the Interlakes High School auditorium which is fully air conditioned. Meredith is also home to some great restaurants and shopping. So while your primary destination may be Holderness for a quality bed and breakfast experience be prepared to venture to neighboring Meredith for some excellent entertainment.
