While summer is a popular season here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire (and for good reason!), there is still plenty of fun to go around in the autumn. So, as summer slowly fades from view, there are several events to look forward to here at the Inn On Golden Pond. One popular event we’re especially looking forward to is the Sandwich Fair 2014. Held each Columbus Day weekend in neighboring Sandwich, New Hampshire, this annual event brings together the all of the best features of a classic county fair for a great time. Read on to see what the Sandwich Fair 2014 has in store!
As with many fairs in the US, the Sandwich Fair began as an agricultural event and has become a treasured tradition. It started out as an annual meeting that allowed area farmers to exhibit and sell their cattle and other livestock in 1886. The next year a band was hired and a Beautiful Baby contest was held, expanding the fair beyond an agricultural market. The first official fair was held in 1909 and it grew year by year until it became the exciting and engaging event that draws crowds of locals and visitors today.
True to its origins, a big part of the Sandwich Fair 2014 will be the agricultural and 4-H events. These events include livestock shows featuring beef and dairy cattle, goats, dogs, horses, sheep, pigs, and working steer. Other 4-H exhibits include member projects in child care, fiber arts, garden crops, and more.
Along with the agricultural shows that showcase the hard work of our region’s farmers, there are other areas to explore at Sandwich Fair 2014 including an antique auto show, an antique tractor pull, crafts and arts on display, photo contests, and much more. Like any good fair, the Sandwich Fair is home to a great midway full of classic fair rides, food and fun. Friday is when the midway opens, a day before the animal shows and exhibits. You can get a special bracelet which allows you to ride as many rides as you please within a specified time period on both Friday and Saturday if you’re a big carnival ride enthusiast! Or you can chow down on some of your favorite fair foods like candy apples, funnel cakes, and more. The festivities on the closing day on Sunday include the Grand Street Parade.
