When you come to spend some time with us at Inn on Golden Pond, you’ll get to experience all the incredible things the area has to offer. From wandering through a charming old town to trekking through the green forest, New Hampshire has an array of activities for guests to do and see. One of our favorite places to visit is Newfound Lake New Hampshire. Located in Grafton County, Newfound Lake is only minutes away from the Inn. We want you to appreciate Newfound Lake New Hampshire as mush as we do. Here are a few things to know about Newfound Lake New Hampshire.
Situated in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Newfound Lake is nestled between the towns of Alexandria, Bridgewater, Bristol, and Hebron. Spading over 4,451 acres, Lake Newfound is the third largest lake in New Hampshire, right behind Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake. The lake is refreshed two times a year by eight underground springs. With 22 miles of beautiful shoreline, Newfound Lake offers plenty of space for visitors to enjoy. Lake Newfound is about 2 ½ miles wide, 6 miles long and its deepest point is 183 feet. It is considered to be one of the deepest lakes in New Hampshire!
Interestingly, the origin of the lake’s name is a mystery, even today. One tradition says that the Native Americans called it “Pasquaney”, which means “the place where birch bark for canoes is found.” Several maps from the 1700’s detail the lake but do not provide a name for the water mass. In the late 1700’s, the lake was referred to as Newfound Lake and has been called that since.
Newfound Lake is full of several different types of fish, from creek chub to rainbow smelt. There are 22 identified different species of fish that can be found in the lake. Every year, Newfound Lake New Hampshire is stocked with additional fish, in preparation for the fishing season. The stocking occurs between mid-March and early July.
If you wish to take a spin around the picturesque lake, you can rent boats from West Shore Marine. The company rents boats by the day or the week. Whether you are looking for a pontoon boat for the family or a runabout to cruise in, the West Shore Marine has it! Rentals are on an “as available” basis, so make sure you make reservations in advance.
Newfound Lake New Hampshire also holds a beautiful lighthouse on the eastern shore. The interesting lighthouse was built in 1932. Keep your eyes open for the structure as you explore the gorgeous Lake!
