When you visit the Inn On Golden Pond, there is so much to see and do. The New Hampshire Lakes region is full of natural beauty and exciting activities. There are several ways to enjoy the scenery and soak in the great outdoors. There are miles of hiking trails, horseback riding and biking opportunities and lake cruises to partake in. Another popular way to take in the landscape of the Lakes Region is a ride on one of several New Hampshire Scenic Railroads. There are two New Hampshire Scenic Railroads near the Inn On Golden Pond, so here is a brief overview of what you can expect should you decide to ride the rails.
The Hobo Railroad invites you to forget your responsibilities and “become a hobo for a day.” Your adventure begins with a departure from the classically styled Hobo Junction Train Station in Lincoln. You then travel through the woods of the White Mountains along the Pemi River, crossing bridges and taking winding turns past points of interest along the way. Get the full Hobo experience by purchasing the famous Hobo Picnic Lunch which includes a sandwich, chips, cookie and drink along with a souvenir hobo bindle stick. During the summer, special entertainment such as storybook characters and Hobo Buddy the clown will perform at Hobo Junction.
The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad’s locomotive travels between Meredith and Lakeport and offers great lake views. This is one of New Hampshire scenic railroads that was once part of the Boston & Maine Railroad that shuttled summer tourists into the New Hampshire resort towns between the 1890s and the 1950s. Cruise by historic and luxurious resort homes, practically passing through their front yards. The mostly downhill ride has a stretch of unobstructed views of Lake Winnipesaukee with Mt. Belknap standing in the background. The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad also offers unique Caboose Rides, where you can experience the click of the rail joints like railroaders of the past did.
These New Hampshire Scenic Railroads are a great way to take in the beautiful summer scenery of the Lakes Region, but if your plans bring you back in the fall, foliage train rides are another popular pastime. See the colors of the forest change as you ride along scenic railways. It’s another experience you won’t forget!
