New Hampshire Fall foliage is almost upon us and the Squam Lakes area will be busy with folks looking at all those colorful leaves. While the leaves will be the major attraction in the coming weeks many people will include stops at some of our wonderful, historic general stores. They’re a fabulous piece of Americana and a great example of authentic New Hampshire.
These stores often are found in some of our smallest towns and are the “social center” of these communities. Residents are in and out to pick up a few groceries, a piece of hardware, the daily paper or sometimes just to chat. You’re likely to find a pickle barrel in the corner and a penny candy counter along the wall, although “penny” candies are harder to find nowadays. In fact, you might find almost anything in these stores. Guess that’s why they’re called general.
Here are a few of our favorite New Hampshire general stores. Some are close to the Inn On Golden Pond, some not so close. But they all have great histories and great New Hampshire charm. When you visit you should plan to stop in.
